WaterChek Proficiency Testing Scheme

WaterChek is a proficiency testing scheme for water chemistry laboratories and is accredited to ISO/IEC 17043:2010 - the internationally recognised standard for competence of proficiency providers.

WaterChek PT Scheme Description

With more than 100 participants in 7 countries, WaterChek has been designed to enable valid comparisons between results from laboratories engaged in research, industry, environmental or public health testing.

Participants use a wide range of tests and methods, and may aim to achieve quite different limits of detection or analytical accuracy and precision.

WaterChek Schedule

WaterChek presents 9 rounds per year that run from February to November (refer timetable).

WaterChek Sample Description

WaterChek is comprised of four main sample types:

Potable: 2 sample sets are provided in each round - one sample set is based on natural waters, and one sample set is based on synthetic water. The natural water sample may be ground water, surface water or prepared from reticulated municipal water. Trace elements may have been added to supplement the natural mineral profile.

Effluent: 2 sample sets are provided in each round. Both are irradiated natural samples. One sample will usually be a treated municipal sample, the other sample will be an effluent with higher nutrient loadings – for example a trade waste, a meat plant effluent, a simulated dairy effluent. Samples are intended to be a realistic and representative matrix, they may be spiked to ensure target ranges are met for the various analytes.

Chemical Residues: 2 sample sets are provided in each round, each sample set contains 3x 2 ml vials of concentrate. The standards have been prepared as concentrates and must be diluted to their working concentration prior to analysis.

Disinfection By-Products: 2 sample sets are provided in each round, each sample set contains 3x 2 ml vials of concentrate. The standards have been prepared as concentrates and must be diluted to their working concentration prior to analysis. WaterChek Reporting

Statistical summaries and reports are e-mailed to participants within 2 weeks of the due date for results.

Participants will receive individualised reports per round which provide information about the data pool of participating laboratories, comparing the laboratory's test results with those of other participating laboratories. Participants will also receive an Annual Report summarising the performance of the participant by test throughout the year and a consolidated summary of all PT data.
