Proficiency Testing for Anti-microbial Veterinary Medicines

A number of years ago, the Australian Dairy Authorities Standards Committee (ADASC), discussed the proficiency of Australian dairy laboratories in the testing of anti-microbial drug residues. They discovered that while laboratories are generally proficient in testing for Penicillin G at around the detection limit of the test, the same may not be true for other anti-microbial drug residues that can occur in milk.

Global Proficiency provides a program to ascertain the proficiency of participating laboratories throughout Australia in the use of available test kits, e.g. Delvotest, AIM BRT to detect residue levels of the more commonly used anti-microbial veterinary medicines such as beta-lactams (e.g. Penicillin, Cloxacillin), and aminoglycocides (e.g. Neomycin).

Anti-microbial Schedule

Samples are dispatched in May and August (refer timetable).

Anti-microbial Sample Description

There are 4 samples in each trial, and the trials are conducted twice per year. At the end of each trial a report is issued stating your result compared to the expected result, and a summary of the results of the other participant laboratories. Participants are given up to three days to examine the samples and return results.
