Vibrio parahaemolyticus Proficiency Testing Scheme

In recent times, there has been a number of significant food poisoning outbreaks associated with the pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Increasingly, customers are looking for assurances that not only are their products free from the organism, but that the laboratories undertaking product testing for the organism are proficient.

Global Proficiency offers a Vibrio parahaemolyticus Proficiency Testing Scheme for laboratories testing to ensure that product is free from the organism.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus Background Information

Vibrionaceae are considered by many to be the leading cause of gastroenteritis in many western nations, including the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, where Vibrio parahaemolyticus causes 50% of all gastroenteritis cases. All cases of gastroenteritis caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus have been attributed to marine foods, and are particularly associated with raw or undercooked seafoods.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus when ingested causes gastrointestinal illness in humans. While infection can occur via the fecal-oral route, ingestion of bacteria in raw or undercooked seafood is the predominant cause of the acute gastroenteritis caused by V. parahaemolyticus.

Laboratories play an important role in helping to ensure that product is free from the organism.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus Schedule

Samples are dispatched in April and August. Participants are given up to two weeks to examine the samples and return results.
